Arkansas American Red Cross volunteers help with Debby recovery efforts

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Many Arkansans are traveling to help with recovery efforts in states impacted by Debby, including one couple from Hot Springs

Kathy and Danny Bates made a living selling paint, but instead of easing into retirement, they chose to become Red Cross volunteers.

Arkansas linemen arrive in Florida and South Carolina to restore power after Debby

In 2023, they joined their first disaster recovery effort, but it wasn't states away, it was in the heart of Arkansas.

"The tornado that went through Little Rock," Danny started, with Kathy finishing, "That kind of brought it home.”

Since then, the couple has deployed five more times to assist in fire, flood, and tornado recovery as far as Maui, New Mexico and now Georgia.

"We have really enjoyed it since we've been doing it,” Danny said. “You get to go and help people and get to listen to their stories.”
