LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Attorney General Tim Griffin filed a motion Friday asking the Arkansas Supreme Court it to dismiss a lawsuit brought by a group trying to put an abortion access amendment on the November 2024 ballot.
The group Arkansans for Limited Government (AFLG) sued after Secretary of State John Thurston rejected its submission of signatures required to put the issue on the ballot. Griffin's filing states AFLG failed to follow state law in the submission process, backing Thurston’s original assessment.
At issue is the interpretation of Arkansas law, including what paperwork is turned in when for having the secretary accept the signatures. In a July 10 letter, Thurston said the signatures were rejected because some required paperwork was not turned in at the same time.
Thurston said he rejected the signatures turned into his office on the July 5 deadline due to the lack of corresponding paperwork for paid canvassers, which was not been included at that time.
