LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A lawsuit filed against the Arkansas Secretary of State’s office regarding signatures gathered for a ballot initiative looking to enshrine abortion access in the state has reached a new stage.
In a Tuesday night filing, the Arkansas Supreme Court has ordered the office of Secretary of State John Thurston to count the signatures gathered by Arkansans for Limited Government for their proposed abortion amendment ballot initiative.
According to the filing, the secretary of state’s office must perform the initial count of the signatures submitted by 9 a.m. on Monday, July 29.
The group said they turned in over 101,000 signatures to Thurston’s office on the July 5 deadline. On July 10, Thurston rejected more than 14,000 of those signatures that he said came from paid canvassers, stating that AFLG had not turned in the legally required paperwork alongside the signature ...
