PARIS (BRPROUD) — Our French Word of the Day is la boxe. It means boxing in English.

Boxing is a sport that involves contestants wearing padded gloves attacking and defending themselves with fists, according to Britannica.

Only amateurs are allowed to compete in boxing competitions at the Olympics. Both men and women can participate in the sport. Male fighters will have three three-minute rounds, and female fighters will have four two-minute rounds. According to the Olympics website, at the end of each round, judges will score fighters on the judging criteria, which include the number of punches landed, technique and competitiveness.

Qualified Team USA boxers for the 2024 Paris Olympics include Jajaira Gonzalez, Jennifer Lozano, Morelle McCane, Alyssa Mendoza, Joshua Edwards, Jahmal Harvey, Roscoe Hill and Omari Jones, according to the Olympics.
