SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Speed-related crashes led to more than 12,000 deaths nationwide in 2022 according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That's almost 30% of all crash fatalities.
The Sioux Falls Police Department said something needs to change. They've been conducting police saturations, where a group of officers patrols a specific area looking for drivers who are breaking the law.
"Certainly, when they do get stopped for speeding, we're looking for anything else that we might find- insurance violations, license violations, seatbelts, warrants, impairment," Sergeant Travis Olsen said.
Police were set up near the East 10th Street viaduct last week to catch speeding drivers. In just one hour's time, they issued 16 speeding tickets, two insurance citations and caught one person driving without a license.
