BROOKINGS S.D. (KELO)-- The Brookings Regional Humane Society stopped taking in animals Monday.
According to a Facebook post, the animal shelter has "urgently taken in over 55 cats/kittens and 4 dogs from a single household after the owner's death."
"Coordinated with the Brookings Community Service Officers, this operation aims to ensure the animals' welfare and future adoption," the post said.
Due to the large intake, BRHS has temporarily closed its animal intake services to focus on these rescues.
The shelter is asking the community for support in donations for medical expenses, supplies such as cat litter and wet all stages cat food and foster homes for nursing mom cats and kittens.
Donations can be dropped off at the shelter during open lobby hours.
