SAN DIEGO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- On Sunday, President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 race, surprising many voters after he had previously said he would remain in the running.
Several pundits and lawmakers across the nation were quick to respond to the news, including California Governor Gavin Newsom. The Golden State leader took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to comment on the president's decision.
Newsom stated, "President Biden has been an extraordinary, history-making president — a leader who has fought hard for working people and delivered astonishing results for all Americans. He will go down in history as one of the most impactful and selfless presidents."
The California governor ended his statement by thanking President Biden.
Some may now be wondering who will replace President Biden as the Democratic nominee. Will it be Governor Newsom?
As it stands, Biden was quick to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris following his withdrawal announcement. Whether or not that endorsement will become reality remains to be seen.
