CAVE CITY, Ark. – Arkansas is on the last day of National Watermelon Month, and more than 200 Arkansas farmers are harvesting over 1,500 acres of watermelons.
Cave City Watermelon Growers Association is said to be home to the world’s sweetest watermelons.
Those farmers attended an event outside the Arkansas State Capitol Building in Little Rock on Wednesday to showcase their offerings.
Trenton Bell is a grower for Johnson Brothers Farms. He’s become a 5th generation picker for the 48-year-long business.
He says the pressure is on to find and sell good watermelons, and this season has been pretty good so far.
“Around here you hear Cave City, and the first thing that comes to your head is watermelons,” Bell said. “That's what we're known as, we're the watermelon capital for a reason. it's a big part of agriculture and the economy around Cave City, especially around the summer.”
