Chula Vista mayor away on Navy duty as council meets to consider immigration resolution

Chula Vista Mayor John McCann is currently serving on active duty overseas with the U.S. Navy Reserves, according to a media statement released Monday by his office.

McCann, a commander in the Navy Reserves with 25 years of service, serves as the executive officer of his reserve unit, which is attached to the Pacific Fleet. His wife, Myllissa McCann, confirmed the deployment in a phone interview, describing it as part of his routine annual service obligation.

“He shows his love by serving, and he is all about serving his country just like he serves the residents of our community,” she said.

A statement from McCann’s office said he is “currently stationed in a theater of operations” and will not be participating in Monday’s city council proceedings.

The Chula Vista City Council is set to hold a special meeting Monday at 5 p.m. to consider adopting a resolution to condemn certain immigration enforcement activities of the Department of Homeland Security in Minnesota and elsewhere, waiving a City Council policy regarding flag display, and directing flags be displayed at half-staff through Feb. 17.

The statement said the special meeting was scheduled following McCann’s deployment, but did not make clear McCann’s stance on the item up for discussion.
