INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Animal Care Services needs your help tackling the shelter’s critical overcrowding crisis.
IACS said Monday that they are at 104% capacity for dogs – every kennel at the facility is currently full as new animals continue to arrive each day.
The surge came after the past week’s severe winter weather, which also limited adoptions and prevented the shelter from creating space.
Shelter leaders say that without immediate relief, staff may be forced to make difficult decisions regarding the animals in their care.
Amanda Dehoney-Hinkle, director of Indianapolis Animal Care Services, says the facility is at a breaking point. “Every full kennel means there is one less dog we can help. The animals in our care are relying on the community to step up for them,” she said.
How you can help
Here are ways the shelter suggests you can pitch in and help clear the kennels:
- Adopt or foster dogs.
- Opening a kennel through adoption gives a dog a permanent home, while fostering—even on a short-term basis—allows dogs to decompress outside of the shelter environment.
- Share stories about available pets on social media.
