Colorado tenants see landmark victory in bedbug case

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — A Jefferson County case is now considered a victory in the fight against bedbugs.

According to a local attorney, a Jefferson County family has been awarded $50,000 in damages against a landlord who did not completely rid an apartment building of bedbugs.

"They (plaintiffs) had been dealing with bedbugs for years and felt the landlord wasn’t properly exterminating them,” attorney Matt Osborne said.

Osborne is the director of consumer law for Ramos Law and said the 2022 case was ruled in his client's favor last week in a five-day jury trial.

Osborne said Colorado passed a bedbug statute back in 2020.

The attorney says his clients have since moved to Greeley.

Osborne added: "If it happens to you, you have rights. Don’t just take it."
