SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Changes to the way county government operates in Minnehaha County are not coming in 2024.
On Tuesday, Minnehaha County Commissioner Joe Kippley announced he doesn’t plan on pushing for voters to weigh in on a Home Rule Charter proposal on the General Election ballot in 2024. The proposal, if passed by a majority of Minnehaha County voters, would have replaced the roles of auditor, register of deeds and treasurer, which are currently picked by voters, with a single finance officer selected by the county commission.
Kippley said he believes it will be best to defer action on the possible changes until “a future election cycle.”
“I think the main point was achieved to bring this back into the public,” Kippley said during Tuesday's meeting. “I don’t like giving into a heckler’s veto on when we bring up an idea.”
Kippley said if people believe the Home Rule Charter change was all about current auditor Leah Anderson, then he’d like to just allow the auditor’s election in 2026 happen.
