BOULDER, Colo. (KDVR) — A warning issued to the University of Colorado Boulder community should make students think twice before parking a bicycle.

Officers say stolen bikes are their number one most consistent call, and the likelihood of a bike being recovered is fairly low unless it's registered.

“As school starts up and we approach the school year, you’re going to start to see all these racks completely fill up and start to get full," said Jonathan Fennick with the CU Boulder Police Department.

"A lot of people coming in aren’t really familiar with how to properly lock their bikes, which makes easy access for bicycles to be stolen," Fennick said.

A lot of cyclists rely on cable locks, but Fennick recommended something different.

“We recommend U locks, which are typically the best. Also having three points of contact: one with the tire, one with the frame of the bike and one with the rack, at a bare minimum.”
