Denver weather: Why are we getting so much rain now?

DENVER (KDVR) -- The Denver metro area has experienced some much-needed moisture to start off the month of August, with the Pinpoint Weather team, as of Wednesday, forecasting rain chances every day of the week.

After dry conditions for much of June and July, this rain may seem like it has come out of nowhere, but Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Liz McGiffin said there is a good explanation for this: Monsoon season.

What is monsoon season?

The North American Monsoon — mainly just called "the monsoon" or "monsoon season" by most people — is a seasonal weather feature that brings precipitation to states in the southwest including Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado.

The season lasts from June 15 to Sept. 30, according to the National Weather Service.

In Colorado, the season typically peaks in late July and early August.
