SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- As summer begins to wind down, swimmers in Sioux Falls will soon be making their way indoors.
If you've passed by Midco Aquatic Center in recent weeks, you've probably spotted construction equipment.
"A new project coming to basically double the size of the locker rooms for both the men's and women's," Park Development Specialist Tory Miedema said.
Tory Miedema is the park development specialist and says the new construction will be home to the men's locker room, while the current spaces will merge and be remodeled for the women. The overall project will double the number -- and increase the size -- of lockers.
"When we opened in 2016, we were thinking there would be, projecting roughly 80- to 100,000 people a year. Obviously, we're up to about 220,000," Miedema said.
The project comes with a price tag of $ 1.8 million, but $500,000 was donated by Joe & Jenny Kirby.
"The Kirby's have been great to the parks system and the city of Sioux Falls," Miedema said. "They jumped up and made it possible," Miedema added.
