DENVER (KDVR) — A witness spotted a group of people shooting off fireworks before a small wildfire sparked Wednesday at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds, investigators said.
The fire was reported at about 6:27 p.m. The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office said the witness saw "several young people" shooting off the fireworks, and "large flames were seen shortly after."
South Metro Fire Rescue said the fire reached about an acre and was under control before 7 p.m. with firefighters left extinguishing hot spots. Aurora Fire Rescue also responded.
The sheriff's office said the people suspected of starting the fire had left the area before deputies arrived.
Arapahoe County is under a Stage 2 burn ban. The sheriff's office said anyone caught in violation will face consequences under the law.
