Getting to know Milly Quezada, the 'Queen of Merengue'

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, Manhattan (PIX11) – The "Queen of Merengue," legendary Dominican singer Milly Quezada sat down with PIX11 News to discuss her early start, career and achievements.

"I just feel like I am part of the community. I don’t feel superior in any way. I am a voice among a lot of voices that reflect the love for our country, our traditions," said Quezada when asked about how she feels to be known as the "Queen of Merengue."

It all began in Washington Heights in the early 1970s. Milagros Del Rosario Quezada Borbon, also known as “Milly,” and her two brothers, Rafael and Martin found themselves wanting to stay connected to their roots after they had migrated from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic as pre-teens in 1965.

"To feel the nostalgia of not being in the country, we would get together, somebody would have a guitar, another the maracas, someone else a conga. We would just start singing and it was a good thing, I was healing it would connect us," Quezada said.

The Quezadas built a repertoire of music that had a major impact on the growing Dominican diaspora back then. What began as a weekend hobby turned into a full-time career.
