NOBLESVILLE. Ind (WISH) — Hamilton County officials shifted to recovery mode Sunday after the White River crested at a record 24.6 feet, a level not seen in more than 113 years.
The historic surge shattered the previous record of 23.8 feet set in 1913. While water levels receded to 21 feet by Sunday morning, emergency leaders warned that hazards like washouts and re-energized electrical lines remain.
“It’s not a record anyone is envious of, but I believe we have handled it with grace,” said Christine Altman, Hamilton County commissioner. “Our hearts go out to those people who have been affected by the flooding and the infrastructure loss. But now we’re moving forward with things that we can control.”
The county’s primary concern is the Hazel Dell Parkway bridge between 106th and 96th streets. Engineers are currently assessing whether the bridge can be repaired or requires a full replacement after rushing water washed away supporting soil.
In Carmel, Mayor Sue Finkham urged spectators to stay away from the bridge area. She said drones, bikes, and cars are hampering official work.
“We’ve got enough going on there that we love the concern but don’t need the help,” Finkham said.
