DENVER (KDVR) -- The Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure installed a new "slow zone" on East Evans Avenue near the University of Denver on Tuesday.

According to DOTI, students and staff at DU regularly cross East Evans Avenue, as it bisects the campus, so the zone is designed to slow drivers down and enhance safety.

The zone will stretch from South University Boulevard to South High Street. The speed in this 0.3-mile-long area will be reduced to 25 mph. There will also be signage and rumble strips on the edge of the zone to let drivers know about it.

DOTI said it will study and compare people's driving speeds during the summer months and during the fall semester when classes resume to see if the zone proves effective in slowing drivers down.

The idea for the zone came after three DU students were injured in a crash at a pedestrian crossing east of South High Street in April. Sun glare was a factor in the crash.
