K9 Smitty retires after 8 years of service to Indiana State Police

PERU, Ind. (WISH) — After eight years of being a good boy and faithfully serving the state of Indiana, K9 Smitty has officially retired.

K9 Smitty, a 10-year-old Belgian Malinois who served alongside his partner, Trooper Doug Weaver, has 174 narcotics searches under his collar, along with many other impressive stats. Throughout his career, Smitty complied:

  • 174 narcotics searches.
  • 110 narcotics arrests.
  • 1.3 pounds of methamphetamine.
  • 34 pounds of marijuana.
  • 1 pound of heroin.
  • .25 Pounds of cocaine.
  • $39,000 United States Currency.
  • 3 tracks.
  • 3 building searches.
  • 2 area searches.
  • 14 perimeter security details.
  • 14 warrant services.
  • 2 firearms seized.
  • 6 apprehensions.

State police say Smitty never missed a shift in his eight-year career due to injury or illness.

Smitty was chosen as a dual-purpose K9 for the Indianapolis District in 2017 and originally partnered with Sgt. Jon Haugh. Following Haugh’s promotion, K9 Smitty was reassigned to Trooper Weaver in 2021.

Smitty loved the Indianapolis community and even provided demonstrations at local schools and community events by showing off his drug recognition skills.
