Lawmakers press Aurora ICE facility for 'increased oversight' after death, inspections

DENVER (KDVR) — Three of Colorado's Democratic federal legislators are demanding more information on unannounced inspections of the Aurora Contract Detention Facility after a mortality report showed a detainee's death was likely the result of in-custody medical care.

Rep. Jason Crow, who represents Colorado's 6th District, alongside U.S. Senators for Colorado Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, sent a letter Monday to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement as a follow-up to repeated requests for greater transparency at the facility, which is privately run by the GEO Group.

These new Colorado laws go into effect Aug. 7

The Aurora facility was subject to an unannounced inspection in October 2023. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General released an inspection report on June 12.
