Little Rock church joining governor’s faith-based initiative program to combat local social issues

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A Little Rock church is joining in on a state program looking to help Arkansans in need.

Bullock Temple CME Church and its senior pastor, Odessa Darrough, are joining a faith-based initiative program started by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and partnering with nonprofits to help combat maternal health in their community.

"It's a new era,” Darrough said. “It's time for a change.”

When Darrough heard that her church's zip code was associated with the highest Black infant mortality rate, she said she knew it was time for her church to step in to help.

She said the governor’s faith-based initiative was the perfect way for that change to happen.

State officials said the program partners faith leaders with other advocates to address issues like childhood hunger, maternal health, foster care, social media and similar issues.
