LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Little Rock Police Department is stepping up to the plate, helping families in the summertime, by giving away free meals this week.

The food is provided by Feed First as part of their mentorship programs for children in the city.

Ordinance passed to create a food commission for Little Rock to combat food insecurity

Officer Takeisha Gilbert said LRPD’s school resource officers are taking their work outside the classroom and into the community.

“You have a lot of kids that don’t have a lot of food at home, so sometimes the only food they get is at school,” Gilbert said. “When school is out that source is gone.” Gilbert said.

LRPD outreach programs, ‘GEMS’ girls empowered by mentoring sisterhood, and ‘SOS’ saving our sons, are passing out meals this week to families in central Arkansas.

Gilbert said this is one way they can lift a financial burden off some families.

“So, this allows us to at least compensate for that,” Gilbert said.

They’re doing it all week at the Black Police Officers Association office at 2521 Arch Street this week from 8:30 to 9:30 is breakfast, and 11:30 to 12:30 is lunch.
