MCPSS to implement security changes — what parents should know

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — As Mobile County Public School's students return to classes Wednesday, there are new security measures that will be introduced this year.

One of the changes is the 'advanced weapons detection systems' created by Evolv. It will be implemented in both middle and high schools throughout MCPSS. Director of Safety and Security Andy Gatewood said that these weapon scanners are not your typical metal detectors.

"We are very proud of the fact that we were one of the first schools in this area, actually the first school in this area," said Gatewood. "Despite the fact that they're in 800 schools nationwide, we're the first ones in this area to employ the machines."

Gatewood says they're faster than the average metal detectors, and students don't have to hold up lines by emptying their pockets.
