Midland County looking to bring medical examiner facility

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) - Midland County Judge Terry Johnson says that Midland County is looking to build a medical examiner facility in the near future.

According to Judge Johnson, the County is waiting for a contract to be prepared for candidates who are interested in the position.

"Once we get that system in place, then we can work on getting a coroner set up and by that we'll need to build a facility," said Johnson.

Judge Johnson highlighted the financial and timing benefits of building a facility in the Tall City, as decades ago there used to be one.

"The cost back and forth to Fort Worth are getting rather expensive. The loved ones the people that are waiting on their loved one to come back can sometimes stretch out," said Judge Johnson. "Well if we can do it here local then we can have control of the time and when the families can have the deceased."

There have been talks with both Ector County Judge Dustin Fawcett and Johnson about the possibility of having this be a joint project between both counties. In the past under different judges, both counties could not agree on this project.

However, now both judges are in discussions on when they will be ready to those ideas to the respective courts and see if they can move forward, together.
