ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) -- Members of the armed forces can often find themselves homesick while on-duty overseas.
For Chelsea Garcia Ortega, a close friend of hers reached out to see if they could send a small gift from home. That small gift was received well with the troops, which gave Garcia Ortega an idea.
The Civil Supply Corps was born, looking to help veterans to receive care packages. She had experience in this realm of charity, given her role was Military Outreach Chair for the Pennsylvania Paralegal Association.
"The feeling was always great to do on a small level, and to be able to do it this extensively, especially when we've only entered our second year of incorporation, is a big deal," Garcia Ortega said.
Military packages are requested by the person asking for certain items to be brought on base. Items can include a pair of flip flops to use as shoes in the showers, books and sports equipment for entertainment and Halloween candy to snack on.
The biggest commodity: Girl Scout Cookies.
This summer alone, the group received donations totaling to over 17,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies. The gifts alone provide a spark of hope to those serving the United States of America.
