MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- As summer vacation comes to an end and students head back to school, Midland ISD has reminded drivers to slow down as pedestrian traffic increases.

Midland ISD students are scheduled to return to school on Tuesday, August 13, with bus route practices beginning Thursday, August 8th. As the first day of school approaches, MISD has urged drivers to help keep the students and community safe by following school zone signs, slowing down, and watching for pedestrians.

Midland ISD stated that the MISD Police would be present around all schools and would have a zero-tolerance policy for speeding.

"Our department will be very present as we return to regular patrols at schools," said MISD Police Chief Scott McKown. "Drivers should be aware that school is back in session and be mindful of students who may attempt to cross the street."

MISD also announced that the flashing school zone lights will be activated on days when school is in session and reminded drivers that vehicles on both sides of the road are required to stop for a school bus when the bus stop sign is displayed, and using a cell phone in a school zone is prohibited and could result in a fine.

“Midland ISD is committed to ensuring the safety of all students and staff as we start the new school year. Let's work together to create a safe environment for everyone,” the MISD announcement stated.
