SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- There's a growing movement to remove sea lions from La Jolla Cove as some locals argue the animals are taking over too many beaches, creating unsafe conditions for both the animals and the public.
La Jolla Cove, a popular spot for both locals and tourists, is known not just for its stunning ocean views, but also for its sea lions.
"It's super cool. I love seeing the babies and their moms," said Destiny Watkins, who is visiting from Montana. Watkins is familiar with visitors getting too close to bison in her home state. She believes some people in La Jolla are crossing similar lines. "Definitely too close," she said.
Viral videos from the Children's Pool show the risks, with sea lions chasing away people as they protect their territory.
"Everyone loves sea lions; they are engaging to watch. But there is not enough room for them. The city needs to take action now and remove them from La Jolla Cove," said Bob Evans, president of La Jolla Parks and Beaches, a nonprofit community advisory group. He believes the sea lions are monopolizing the beaches.
