NYC officials warn of asbestos after Upper East Side steam main leak

UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (PIX11) – Residents of an area on Manhattan’s Upper East Side were warned to close their windows and remain indoors due to asbestos after a steam main leak Wednesday, officials said.

The steam main leak happened in the area of Park Avenue between East 69th Street and East 70th Street, according to New York City Emergency Management.

“Residents in the area around Park Ave/69th St. are advised to stay clear and close windows as asbestos-containing debris has been confirmed, following a steam main leak that Con Edison has shut down,” Aries Dela Cruz, a spokesperson for New York City Emergency Management, said on X at 8:13 p.m.

Con Edison crews are working to clean up the area. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection is monitoring the air quality, the Emergency Management spokesperson said.
