Over 50 cats rescued from home; BRHS looking for help

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The Brookings Regional Humane Society has taken in nearly 60 cats and kittens and 4 dogs since Thursday, and in the coming days that number is expected to rise. Now, they're looking for support from the community.

Staff said the humane society comfortably houses about 30 cats and six dogs. As of Tuesday, it was over capacity after doubling the number of cats and filling up the rest of the dog kennels in just a few days.

"We weren't empty to start from the beginning. We had the other animals already. We had about 50 to 80 animals already in our care and so we had to kind of move them to different places. We've popped up crates, that sort of thing," Shelter Coordinator Moiria Curry said.

The humane society is still working with Animal Control to catch the rest of the cats that are still inside the home.

"It definitely slows us down because all of these animals will need veterinary care and we have a very small shelter and a small volunteer surgery team and so it will take us months to kind of catch up from this," Humane Society Executive Director Maia Moore said.
