SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) -- More than 600 fentanyl pills were seized in a traffic stop near 900 South and Main Street in Salt Lake City on Friday, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
SLCPD said its officers made the stop just after 5 p.m. when the suspect car made an unspecified "moving violation." During the stop, the officer reportedly asked to search the car, which the driver agreed to.
Officers with the department's Liberty Patrol Division's Homeless Resource Center say they found more than 600 fentanyl pills along with cash, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia in the search, allegedly belonging to the car's passenger.
The passenger, identified as William Binkerd, 41, was taken into custody on felony drug charges including distribution of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. He also faces a misdemeanor charge for possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to court documents, Binkerd admitted to selling fentanyl to homeless individuals as well as some others. Police said he is currently on release and awaiting trial on two other distribution cases.
Binkerd has since been ordered to be held without bail, pending a pretrial hearing.
The driver of the car, who was left unidentified, was cited for the moving violation, according to Salt Lake City Police.
