PA teens learn what it takes to be a cop at Camp Cadet in Cambria County

EBENSBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) -- Children ages 12 to 15 learned the different jobs of police officers in Cambria County.

Camp Cadet is a weeklong sleepaway camp at Mount Aloysius University. Campers learned the different aspects of police work, ranging from forensic science, drug prevention and using the police radar.

"As we train them throughout the week, we put them through a lot of different tests and physical fitness, and expose them to different things later in the week," Troy McMullen, Pennsylvania State Trooper and camp director said.

Altoona to host license plate replacement event

The camp teaches the cadets more than the ins and outs of police work, such as the toughness of wearing the badge.

"We've been experiencing mental toughness and physical toughness," Emerson Rakar, camper of Camp Cadet said.

Officials said 90 applications went into the Cambria County Camp Cadet program, with 48 applicants being accepted. Since its founding in 2012, some graduates of Camp Cadet have gone to different careers, such as rising to certain ranks in the United States Military or finding a job in the game commission.
