SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The long road to a build a safe parking site for homeless individuals near the airport is one step closer to becoming a reality with the Coastal Commission agreeing to allow 190 spaces for people who have nowhere to call home.
“Provides a safety net for those individuals who only have a car left with them, and it’s what enables them to get to their jobs and hold on to a shred of dignity and keeps them from falling deeper into homelessness,” said San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria.
The city also got permission to erect two large tents to temporarily house 600 homeless people at the site as well, but it is unclear if city staff members will move this plan forward. Some residents from Point Loma and Liberty Station said they are angry with the communication they’ve been experiencing with the city staff members and the mayor over the H Barracks project.
“Four-hundred and 50 people rallied against this development, particularly the phase two 600-person tent shelter,” said one man at the Coastal Commission meeting against Barracks H.
