SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Two Minnehaha County commissioners say it's time for South Dakota's largest county to consider a home rule charter. The proposal would replace the roles of auditor, register of deeds and treasurer, which are currently picked by voters, with a single finance officer selected by the county commission.
The commission had a full house Tuesday morning in Sioux Falls, where the public had a chance to weigh in on the proposal.
"I just feel very strongly that we should be able to vote for who we want, not have somebody appoint somebody and tell us this is what's best for you," Dee Brown Smith of Sioux Falls said.
"When the government is more efficient, it becomes a better steward of taxpayer dollars," Mark Willadsen said. "It's time for the state's largest county to become more efficient in today's world. It's working well for the state's largest city, has for 30 years."
The proposed home rule charter would also change the county administrator to a county manager with increased authority. Former Sioux Falls City councilor Rick Kiley says the new position will make for quick responses.
