Queens man charged with shooting at NYPD officers with ghost gun

EDGEMERE, Queens (PIX11) --- A 60-year-old man is accused of firing at two NYPD officers with a ghost gun near a Queens NYCHA complex on Saturday, authorities said Thursday.

Joel Kelly was indicted on two counts of attempted murder for allegedly shooting one round at the cops who were responding to a shots fired call at the Beach 41st Street Houses in Far Rockaway at around 12:20 a.m., according to prosecutors.

Kelly was visiting his sister in the NYCHA complex and when she told him to leave, he allegedly fired two rounds with a 9mm pistol outside her apartment, authorities said.

Shortly after, the officers responding to the scene saw Kelly walking near Beach 51st Street and began chasing him when he allegedly turned and fired at them, according to court records. The cops were not injured.

Kelly then allegedly ran and threw the pistol away before he was apprehended. The weapon, which was a ghost gun, was recovered at the scene.

Investigators found two 9 mm shell casings, one live round, and three bullet fragments in the
hallway outside of Kelly’s sister’s apartment, prosecutors said.
