BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Dozens of sidewalks in Blair County will be filled with red sand this week. It's to raise awareness about human trafficking and to promote and protect the rights of victims.
Victim Services, along with the Blair County Human Anti-Trafficking Response Team (HART) is working to raise awareness of trafficking with Red Sand Project Art Installations.
"We are filling the cracks of our sidewalks with red sand to really emulate and bring attention to the people in our community right here in Blair County, who have fallen victim, who have fallen through the cracks of our society that no one's watching or paying attention to that are most vulnerable to being trafficked right here in Blair County," Ashley Gay Vocco, a member of HART said.
In a press release, the response team said that human trafficking seems like it only happens in movies or in big cities, but unfortunately, it happens in Central Pennsylvania and in Blair County. In 2018, prosecutors announced that individuals had been charged with trafficking for the first time in the history of the county.
