REGO PARK, Queens (PIX11) -- Tenants in Rego Park are expressing their frustration following a recent string of mail theft.
Surveillance video shows the bold robberies and on at least two occasions in the last month, a man appears to approach the mailbox at an apartment building in Rego Park at around 4 a.m.
The man can be seen opening the box with a key and shuffling through the mail before eventually walking off with it.
One resident who wanted to remain anonymous is a tenant in the building near Booth Street and 65th Road and says he is angry and upset. He lost a check as a result of the last robbery. “He has a key for the main door and the boxes here and he specifically knows which apartment has checks in the mail so he took only those things and put them in his bag.”
The building superintendent Jose Alvarez also had a check and a credit card stolen. He installed a camera three months ago in the mail area to deal with the rampant theft of packages but says this is the first time the building has dealt with someone breaking into the mailbox.
