INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Silly Safari is bottle-feeding a month-old male reindeer calf named Artemis after his mother was unable to produce milk, requiring human care.
Artemis was named after astronauts who returned to Earth the same weekend he was born. Reindeer are domesticated caribou, distinct from their wild North American counterparts.
The organization noted that reindeer are the only deer species in which both males and females grow antlers. Males typically shed theirs in December, while females keep theirs until March or April, with antlers regrowing annually.
Artemis has begun developing small antler “nubbins” and is expected to grow two small spikes by late summer.
