NEW YORK (PIX11) -- An NYPD detective known as "Angel cop" is retiring after 29 years and got a surprise thank you.
Detective Patrick Blanc has worked the South Jamaica streets for 29 years.
Blanc grew up in Queens with a strong beautiful single mom, Altagrace Blanc. He joined the NYPD in June of 1995 to help people.
Climbing to the ranks of detective, Blanc has quite a reputation as a real champion for his community, especially the children.
Blanc never forgot where he came from. Some of the residents he served have a nickname for him: Angel cop.
For Blanc it wasn’t just about policing, it was about giving. He helped coordinate countless clothing, toy, and food drives.
He says as a little boy he wanted to make his mark, and made quite an impact in the hearts and minds of the community he loves.
