SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- South Dakota leaders are reacting to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz being named Kamala Harris' running mate.
Harris made the announcement Tuesday morning in a post on Instagram and in texts to supporters.
South Dakota Democratic Party Chair Shane Merrill said in a news release Walz will be a great running mate and is a proven leader.
"He provided free school meals for students, something South Dakota's Governor refuses to do," Merrill said in a news release. "He's shown that he can work across party lines, including when he flipped his district for US Congress. And, with a slim Democratic majority in the Minnesota legislature, he's worked on bipartisan policies for the betterment of his state."
"He has been a staunch advocate for reproductive rights and defended voting rights. He’s a former teacher who understands the struggles our educators and schools face today. He also grew up in a small town and knows what our rural areas need to thrive," Merrill said, who added he has ties to Butte, Nebraska were Walz graduated high school.
