SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- Students from Axtell Park School in Sioux Falls are learning important life skills thanks to the generosity of other people.

These teenagers are learning about the cuisine of Latin America during Flavors of the World camp at Plum's Cooking Company.

"Tacos, we're going to make our own tortillas, both flour and corn, we're going to make chile rellenos," Plum's Cooking Company Culinary Director Lizzie Stewart said.

Lizzie Stewart is culinary director, and says there are ten teens at this week's culinary camp.

"We break the kids up and they get an opportunity to try each little station, we come together for a family meal afterwards," Stewart added.

The list includes 13-year-old Fanta. She's one of four students from Axtell Park School who received an invitation to camp following a fundraising event in May.

"There really wasn't a ton of effort. I think the community just saw something that was really great and they stepped up," Stewart said.

From small-town SD to Nashville

"It's an opportunity for them to build some confidence, to find joy in something a little bit different," Sioux Falls School District social worker Brandi David said.
