MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO) -- One person was transported to the hospital after a structure fire Thursday, according to the City of Mitchell.
Mitchell Fire and EMS responded to the fire at 1605 E. 1st Avenue at 3:25 p.m. Crews encountered heavy smoke coming from units #5 and #6 of the townhomes.
Fire crews made entry into #6 and other adjacent units for a victim search. The fire soon vented through the roof and heavy flames could be seen above those units. Firefighters were removed from the interior and began to extinguish the flames from the exterior.
Several animals were rescued and unharmed.
The fire was extinguished by 5:00 p.m. and crews began to search for reignition areas.
Emergency crews from Ethan, Mt. Vernon, Alexandria Fire Department, Davison County Search and Rescue as well as the American Red Cross, and the Salvation Army for mutual aid during this event.
The condition of the person transported to the hospital was unavailable. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown.
