Summer camp: Courage through choreography

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- We're getting to that time of year when summer camp season is winding down. That includes one camp in Sioux Falls where the participants put on dance shoes instead of sunscreen and bug spray.

Their week of rehearsal came to end Thursday with a big production in front of their families.

Following the yellow brick road involves following dance instructions for these Dance Gallery summer campers. In this production of The Wizard of Oz, students, in grades K through five, are learning that performing in a studio is a lot harder than the professionals make it look.

"They're doing like tippy-toe stuff and running around," nine-year-old Hank Skattum said.

No tippy-toe stuff for this performance, but there were plenty of butterflies.

"I'm like a shy person and I don't like dancing in front of people," 11-year-old Dayzsha Chrisman said.

But that's the point of this camp: to muster the courage to try something new that's both challenging and rewarding.
