Support mounts for 4-way stop at deadly intersection

HUTCHINSON COUNTY, S.D. (KELO) -- The South Dakota Department of Transportation recently announced they will add a four-way stop at the intersection of Highway 81 and Highway 18 after a crash claimed the lives of two people last month.

The busy highway intersection just east of Menno and south of Freeman has had a long history of crashes.

"Well, dating back to my younger days, we ran a wrecker service out of Freeman, and we came down to this corner intersection many times to tow people out, pick up cars that got smashed and things like that," Reno Huber said.

And Meridian Corner, a restaurant nestled at the intersection, has been at the center of it all.

"I've seen people get rear-ended, I've seen people get T-boned, I've seen people hit the ditch to avoid people. It's kind of all sorts of different accidents out here," Meridian Corner manager Abby Streyle said.

Right now, at this intersection, there's stop signs on Highway 18 but none on Highway 81. Once they put those stop signs on Highway 81, some locals say it's going to be a welcome site.
