Toddler hospitalized after falling into flooded basement at Rush County home

(WISH) — A 2-year-old was receiving care in a hospital after accidentally falling into his home’s flooded basement in Rush County Tuesday evening.

The Rush County Sheriff’s Office received the call about the child around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Like much of eastern Indiana, the sheriff’s office says Rush County “experienced historic flooding.” Floodwater impacted officers responding to the scene, blocking off several roads and even surrounding the residence.

A nearby farmer with a tractor had to assist first responders in reaching the home. The farmer also helped move the child and his family members to safety.

The child’s mom and other medics performed life-saving measures on the child, who was eventually flown to a hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.

It’s not clear how the child fell into the basement, though officials say “all indications are that the incident was a tragic accident.”
