Traffic diverted after sinkhole opens up on Morena Boulevard

A broken water main caused a large sinkhole in San Diego’s Morena neighborhood Wednesday night and prompted city officials to close several streets to traffic.

The problem was reported around 11:25 p.m. at the intersection of Morena Boulevard and Napa Street.

In response, the city shut down the southbound lanes of Morena between West Morena Boulevard and Linda Vista Road. One northbound lane was closed between Linda Vista Road and Cushman Avenue, the city said on social media.

Officials expect the closures to last for 24 to 48 hours as repairs are completed, a San Diego police spokesperson said.

The city asked drivers to avoid the area if possible and said it was bringing in water wagons to serve customers affected by the broken main.
