DENVER (KDVR) -- A water main break on a road in a Denver metro area neighborhood Sunday caused water to shoot 15 feet in the air and opened up a 12-foot sinkhole, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.

The water main break was in the 4300 block of East Hinsdale Place in Centennial.

The break was caused by an 8-inch pipe bursting, but it was unknown what caused that to happen.

Denver Water was on the scene of the break trying to put a temporary patch on the line. According to the sheriff's office, this could take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours. The utility will then return later on to put a more permanent patch in place.
