Repairs continued Monday morning at El Camino Real and Carlsbad Village Drive, where a water main break opened up a truck-sized sinkhole over the weekend.
The fracture in the 16-inch water line was discovered early Saturday morning, and the intersection was closed in all directions for repairs. Traffic was restored in some lanes Sunday afternoon.
As of Monday afternoon, only westbound Carlsbad Village Drive from Appian Road to El Camino Real remained closed for road repairs, said Amy Ventetuolo, the city’s communication and engagement director.
“Other occasional lane closures may occur, as we continue to finish repairs,” Ventetuolo said in an email Monday. “As soon as all work is complete, we can reopen all lanes of traffic, which is anticipated by midweek.”
Pedestrians, bike riders and drivers may need to use alternate routes around the intersection and should account for additional travel time, city officials said.
The intersection is roughly two blocks south of state Route 78 in one of the city’s more heavily traveled areas. City staffers declared a local emergency to expedite the repairs.
“When issues arise that affect public safety and quality of life, we work as quickly as possible to address them for our community,” City Manager Geoff Patnoe said in a news release.
