Why is it Breckenridge and not Breckinridge?

DENVER (KDVR) -- Breckenridge has been an official town for almost as long as the state of Colorado itself, having officially been "formed" in 1880, though it had already existed for over two decades before that.

While everyone knows it as Breckenridge now, it wasn't always called that. In fact, for a time, it was known by a different name: Breckinridge.

Breckenridge vs. Breckinridge

The town that is now officially known as Breckenridge was first formed in November 1859 when a prospecting company led by George Spencer and others formally established it, according to the Colorado Encyclopedia.

According to Breckenridge History, Spencer decided to name the town after a nearby pass named after Thomas Breckenridge.
