Woman drowns in Connetquot River trying to save her dog, police say

OAKDALE, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A woman drowned in the Connetquot River trying to rescue her dog Sunday morning in Oakdale, according to police.

Catherine Andreau, 62, was staying on a houseboat around 1:30 a.m., police said. The investigation showed she jumped into the water to rescue her dog, which had also jumped in.

Around 8 a.m., an employee at the Oakdale Yacht Club on Shore Drive called the police after discovering Andreau in the water. Officials said she was pulled from the water and pronounced dead.

Her dog was taken to a local veterinarian to be treated, according to officials.

The medical examiner will determine Andreau's cause of death.
